Abilene, Abilene, Prettiest Town I’ve Ever Seen

April 22, 2010

They say that beggars can’t be choosers, but sometimes they don’t have to be.  Take the case of Abilene, Texas.  While it’s maybe not the prettiest town I’ve ever seen, it is definitely a town that I’ll remember fondly.  Unlike many of the towns we’ve been through, Abilene retains a vibrant downtown.

Perhaps you might be wondering what a group of twenty-somethings do at night.  Well in Abilene we rocked out on the roller rink and rolled some strikes in the bowling lanes.  Why did we do these things?  Because the 1st Babtist Church of Abilene, Texas has the sweetest rec center EVER, including a six lane bowling alley, and a roller rink.  Try to picture a dozen young men and women rocking out to Meatloaf and Celine Dion while making laps on roller skates and in-line skates in the middle of the night.  It was hilarious, but probably one of the best times we’ll have on this trip.

I don’t know how many roller rinks still exist in America.  They’ve gone the way of pinball machines and drive-in theaters, but it makes me exceedingly happy to know that one still exists in Abilene.
